The 300 most cited publications in the field of implantology

Partager

Two articles from the research of the Ardentis Dental Clinics group appear in 155th and 186th place in the ranking proposed by Alarcón et al. They will be featured soon.

In February 2017, the article “The 300 most-cited articles in implant dentistry” (Alarcón et al., 2017) was published in The International Journal of Oral & Maxillofacial Implants. It compiles academic and significant publications in implantology, indexed and published between 1986 and 2015. The number of citations in journals listed in the ISI Web of Science* serves as a measurable parameter for ranking the publications.

The search for these publications was limited to the following six journals:

  • Clinical Oral Implants Research (COIR)

  • Clinical Implant Dentistry and Related Research (CIDRR)

  • European Journal of Oral Implantology (EJOI)

  • The International Journal of Oral & Maxillofacial Implants (JOMI)

  • Implant Dentistry (ID)

  • Journal of Oral Implantology (JOI)

COIR and JOMI have the privilege of publishing 92% of these 300 articles. However, since 2014, CIDRR has had the highest impact factor in the discipline, and EJOI focuses on high-level evidence studies, mainly reviews and randomized trials.

Most cited articles were published before 2000, at least 20 years ago. Naturally, they have had time to accumulate citations, but for Alarcón et al., topics covered after 2000 tend to become obsolete more rapidly.

The top two articles alone account for 5% of the 49,378 citations generated by the 300 articles, with 1,331 citations for the first and 1,130 for the second. They are:

  • Albrektsson T, Zarb G, Worthington P, Eriksson AR. The long-term efficacy of currently used dental implants: A review and proposed criteria of success. Int J Oral Maxillofac Implants 1986;1:11–25.

  • Adell R, Eriksson B, Lekholm U, Brånemark PI, Jemt T. A long-term follow-up study of osseointegrated implants in the treatment of totally edentulous jaws. Int J Oral Maxillofac Implants 1990;5:347–359.

These articles address implant success and survival, describing criteria for long-term implant evaluation.

Why limit the search to six journals? It is surprising that the authors did not include Journal of Clinical Periodontology and Journal of Periodontology, as did Fardi et al. (2017). In the latter article, Journal of Clinical Periodontology ranks third among dental journals publishing the 100 most-cited implantology articles. Recently, Chiang et al. (2018) reported the ranking of the 100 most-cited articles in periodontal journals, including eleven on implantology. The authors note a significant progressive increase in average citation numbers over time for implantology articles in periodontal journals.
