Wisdom tooth extraction is often necessary to prevent pain, infections, or tooth misalignment. Our surgeons provide safe and comfortable care.

What are wisdom teeth?

Wisdom teeth are your third molars, located at the very back of your mouth. They usually appear between the ages of 16 and 25, a transitional period into adulthood, which explains their name.
In a small number of people, they grow normally and fit properly into the dental arch. However, in most cases, they lack space, grow at an angle, or remain impacted under the gum or bone, which can lead to various oral health issues.

Why extract wisdom teeth?

Wisdom teeth can cause you pain, infections, cavities on neighboring teeth, cysts, or crowding. Extraction, often preventive, helps avoid these complications and maintain a healthy mouth long-term.

Wisdom Teeth Extraction Procedure

  1. Consultation and initial examination: A panoramic X-ray or scan is performed to assess the position of your teeth. A personalized evaluation helps identify potential risks and plan your treatment safely.
  2. Anesthesia and your comfort: Local anesthesia is usually sufficient for a simple extraction. Depending on the complexity of the procedure or your level of anxiety, general anesthesia or sedation may also be offered.
  3. Surgical extraction: Modern and precise techniques are used to minimize trauma and ensure your comfort. Sutures may be placed if necessary to support proper healing.
  4. Post-operative follow-up: Pain relief medication is prescribed and personalized advice is provided. Healing is monitored, and a follow-up plan is adapted to your individual needs.

  1. Rest and apply ice to reduce swelling
  2. Eat soft foods and stay well hydrated
  3. Maintain gentle oral hygiene around the treated area
  4. Take prescribed medications as directed by your specialist
  5. Follow-up appointments to ensure fast and complication-free healing

What are wisdom teeth?

Wisdom teeth are the third molars located at the back of your mouth. They usually appear between ages 16 and 25. Because there is often not enough space for them to grow properly, they may remain impacted, grow at an angle, or cause pain and infections.

When should wisdom teeth be extracted?

Extraction is recommended for most people, especially in cases of pain, infections, cavities, cysts, lack of space, or risk of shifting other teeth. In some cases, even without symptoms, your dentist may advise preventive extraction to avoid future complications.

Does wisdom tooth extraction hurt?

The procedure is performed under local anesthesia (or sometimes general anesthesia if desired). Patients do not feel pain during the extraction. Afterward, mild pain and swelling may occur, but these are well controlled with medications prescribed by your dentist.

What is the recovery process after extraction?

Healing usually takes a few days to about one week. During this time, you are advised to avoid very hot or hard foods, refrain from smoking, and maintain gentle oral hygiene. Your dentist will always provide personalized recommendations to support a smooth and complication-free recovery.

Is wisdom tooth extraction covered by insurance?

In Switzerland, basic insurance (LAMal) may cover wisdom tooth extraction depending on tooth position, infection risk, and case complexity. The dentist will submit a request to LAMal after the preoperative assessment. If LAMal coverage is denied, some supplementary insurance plans may cover part of the cost. It is recommended to check with your insurance provider before the procedure.
