General anesthesia allows you to undergo certain complex treatments or receive care if you are anxious, in complete safety. It is carefully supervised by a specialized medical team.

What are treatments under general anesthesia?

Dental treatments under general anesthesia allow procedures to be performed without pain or stress. They are intended particularly for:

-Young children from 4 years old

-Patients with dental phobia

-People with disabilities

All types of care can be performed: from cavity treatment to wisdom tooth extraction and implant placement.

Available in our clinics in Collombey, Maupas, Pully et Bulle.

Why choose general anesthesia for dental care?

General anesthesia allows you to undergo dental treatment in complete peace of mind, without pain or stress. It gives you the option to combine several treatments into a single session, while ensuring optimal comfort and safe care, especially if you are particularly anxious or vulnerable.

How treatment under general anesthesia works

  1. Initial consultation: You meet with an Ardentis dentist to determine the required treatments. Your general health is assessed, including age (≥ 4 years), BMI, and any medical history or existing conditions.
  2. Pre-operative appointment: A mandatory consultation takes place with an anesthesiologist from the MAC team, a trusted Ardentis partner. This appointment is held either in a clinic or in a hospital, depending on your case.
  3. Procedure: Treatment is performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia. The duration depends on the procedures involved and rarely exceeds five hours. After waking up in the recovery room, you may return home accompanied by a relative.
  4. Recovery and monitoring: You wake up in a recovery room under close medical supervision to ensure your comfort and safety before being discharged.

Care under general anesthesia

For routine treatments or surgical procedures, care under general anesthesia is offered at our clinics in Collombey, Maupas, Pully and Bulle

Eligibility criteria:

  • Good overall health, without serious medical conditions
  • From age 4

If these criteria are not met, patients are referred to Rennaz Hospital in collaboration with our referring practitioners, Ms. Stéphanie Mesquita and Ms. Carol Guenin. For additional comfort, certain surgical procedures are performed at Clinique de la Prairie in Clarens.

Frequently Asked Questions about General Anesthesia

When is general anesthesia used in dentistry

General anesthesia may be offered to you if you are highly anxious, if your child is young, if you have a disability, or when a long and complex treatment needs to be completed in a single session, such as multiple cavities, wisdom tooth extractions, or implant placement. It allows you to receive dental care without pain and with complete peace of mind.

What treatments can be performed under general anesthesia?

Almost all dental treatments can be performed under general anesthesia, including restorative care such as cavity treatment, tooth extractions, implant placement, and more complex surgical procedures. The goal is to treat your entire mouth effectively while minimizing stress and pain. This decision is always made in agreement between you, your dentist, and the anesthesiologist.

Who can benefit from general anesthesia?

The treatment is performed on an outpatient basis. After the procedure, you are taken to the recovery room before returning home accompanied by a relative. The duration varies depending on the treatment, but rarely exceeds five hours. A pre-operative appointment with an anesthesiologist is always scheduled to prepare the procedure safely.

How is a dental procedure under general anesthesia carried out?

The treatment is performed on an outpatient basis. After the procedure, the patient is taken to a recovery room before going home with a companion. The duration varies depending on the procedure but rarely exceeds 5 hours. A preoperative consultation with an anesthesiologist is always scheduled before the intervention.

Are these treatments covered by insurance?

Basic insurance (LAMal) does not cover routine dental care. However, if a medical condition or disability prevents conventional treatment, a coverage request can be submitted. Some supplementary insurance plans may also cover part of the costs. It is recommended to check your contract before the procedure.
