Cavity treatment removes infected tissue and restores your tooth using durable and aesthetic materials, while preserving as much healthy dental structure as possible.

What is a dental cavity?

A cavity is a progressive lesion of the tooth caused by bacteria in dental plaque. It destroys the enamel and then the dentin, potentially causing pain, sensitivity, and if untreated, deeper damage to the dental pulp.

Why treat cavities promptly?

Early cavity treatment helps you prevent progression to complications such as infection, abscess or tooth loss. It also relieves pain, preserves your natural tooth, and protects your overall oral health.

Cavity Treatment Procedure

  1. Diagnosis and evaluation: your dentist performs a clinical examination and, if necessary, takes X-rays to accurately identify the cavity and assess its depth.
  2. Cleaning and tooth preparation : infected tooth tissue is removed to prepare your tooth to receive the restoration properly.
  3. Aesthetic and functional restoration : your tooth is restored with a tooth-coloured composite, ensuring a durable restoration that provides strength and comfort.
  4. Recommended frequency and advice : dental check-ups every 6–12 months help you detect cavities at an early stage. Proper oral hygiene, including brushing, flossing and a balanced diet, remains the best way to protect your teeth.

Frequently Asked Questions about Cavities

Can a cavity be treated during the first consultation?

During your initial visit, cavity treatment is generally not performed immediately. Before any intervention, a complete diagnosis is required to assess your oral condition. This includes a clinical examination and X-rays to locate the cavity, measure its depth and determine the most appropriate treatment for you. These steps ensure safe, effective and long-lasting care, while providing you with a fully personalised treatment plan.

How is a cavity treated?

Treatment depends on the stage of your cavity. At an early stage, simple cleaning and a composite resin filling may suffice. If the cavity is more advanced, an inlay, onlay or crown may be performed. In very deep cases, root canal treatment may be necessary.

Is cavity treatment painful?

Thanks to modern anesthesia, cavity treatment is now virtually painless. You may experience slight sensitivity after the procedure, but this usually subsides within a few days. At Ardentis, everything is done to ensure your comfort and peace of mind during the treatment.

How can cavities be prevented?

Prevention relies on good oral hygiene. You are encouraged to brush your teeth 2 to 3 times a day with fluoride toothpaste, use dental floss, maintain a balanced, low-sugar diet, and attend regular dental check-ups. An annual check-up helps you detect cavities at an early stage and prevents more extensive treatments.

Is cavity treatment covered by insurance?

In Switzerland, cavity treatment is generally not covered by basic health insurance (LAMal). Some supplementary insurance plans may reimburse part of the cost, depending on the coverage you have chosen. It is therefore recommended that you check with your insurer before treatment.
