What is bruxism?

Bruxism, or teeth grinding, can cause wear of your teeth, as well as pain in your facial muscles and jaw joints. Ardentis offers personalised solutions, such as protective mouthguards, to safeguard your teeth and relieve your joints.

Why treat bruxism?

Appropriate treatment helps you protect your enamel, relieves pain, prevents dental fractures, and preserves your oral health. It also improves your sleep quality and daily comfort.

Bruxism Treatment Procedure

  1. Comprehensive diagnosis: your dentist performs a clinical examination and assesses your symptoms, such as tooth wear, muscle tension and joint pain. An additional sleep assessment may be recommended if required.
  2. Personalised treatment plan: depending on the complexity of your case, collaboration with specialists such as physiotherapists, sleep specialists or pulmonologists may be arranged. A custom-made night guard is then fabricated for you.
  3. Tailored advice: personalised advice is provided to help you reduce risk factors, including stress, posture and sleep hygiene.
  4. Regular follow-up: the effectiveness of your treatment is monitored during follow-up appointments, with possible adjustments to the night guard or treatment plan as needed.

Frequently Asked Questions about Bruxism

What is bruxism?

Bruxism is the involuntary grinding or clenching of your teeth, most often during sleep. It may be related to stress, anxiety or sleep disorders. Over time, it can cause enamel wear, muscle or joint pain, and even headaches.

What are the symptoms of bruxism?

Common signs include sensitive or worn teeth, jaw pain upon waking, headaches, or grinding noises reported by a partner. In some cases, bruxism can lead to cracked teeth or problems with the temporomandibular joint (TMJ).

How is bruxism diagnosed?

Diagnosis is based on a clinical examination performed by your dentist, who observes tooth wear, the condition of your enamel, and asks you about your symptoms. In certain cases, a sleep study (polysomnography) may be recommended to assess the intensity of your bruxism and its potential effects.

What treatments are available for bruxism?

Treatment depends on the cause and severity of your bruxism. Wearing a night guard is often prescribed to protect your teeth. Physiotherapy, stress management, and relaxation techniques can also be beneficial for you. In some cases, botulinum toxin injections may be offered to relax overly tense muscles.

Can bruxism go away over time?

In some children, bruxism may naturally decrease with growth. In adults, it usually persists without appropriate treatment. Early management helps you limit complications, preserve your oral health, and improve your quality of life.
