Adhesive dentistry – conservative treatments
Adhesive dentistry is at the heart of Ardentis’ care philosophy. For over 30 years, our internationally recognised experts have refined and taught this approach, both in Switzerland and internationally, through scientific publications and conferences. This discipline focuses on minimally invasive restoration, aiming to preserve as much of your natural tooth structure as possible, while replacing only the affected tissue with highly precise adhesive restorations such as onlays, veneers and partial restorations.
Thanks to this unique clinical and academic expertise, Ardentis offers you aesthetic, durable and biologically respectful treatments, reducing the need for more invasive procedures and ensuring long-term oral health.
THE ESSENTIAL
Adhesive dentistry preserves as much of your natural tooth as possible, using modern and aesthetic techniques to securely restore your damaged teeth.
What is adhesive dentistry?
Adhesive dentistry is a minimally invasive approach aimed at preserving as much of your natural tooth structure as possible. It uses modern materials composite resins, ceramic or composite inlays and onlays that bond directly to your tooth, minimizing damage to healthy tissue.
Result: durable, aesthetic restorations that respect your oral health.
When are conservative treatments recommended?
Conservative dental treatments are recommended in several situations to restore and preserve the health and function of your teeth, while favouring durable and minimally invasive solutions.
- Dental cavities: conservative treatments such as composite resin fillings are essential to treat dental cavities. When a cavity is detected at an early stage, composite is used to fill the cavity after removing the decayed part of the tooth, ensuring a discreet and long-lasting restoration.
- Dental fractures: if a tooth is broken, minor dental fractures can be effectively repaired using composite fillings or inlays/onlays. These materials restore the integrity of your tooth while providing excellent aesthetics and high strength.
- Tooth wear: teeth worn down by bruxism or other forms of abrasion can benefit from conservative treatments. Composite or ceramic inlays and onlays can rebuild worn tooth surfaces, improving both the function and appearance of your teeth.
- Replacement of old restorations: old amalgam (silver) fillings can be replaced with composite restorations for improved aesthetics and a more biocompatible approach. This allows your teeth to be restored more discreetly and reduces exposure to mercury.
- Cracks and fissures: small cracks or fissures in your teeth can be treated with composite materials to prevent their progression and avoid more invasive treatments in the future. These treatments strengthen the tooth structure and help prevent complications.
- Restoration after root canal treatment: after a root canal treatment, your tooth may be weakened. Inlays and onlays are often used to reinforce the tooth structure and protect it against fractures, providing a durable and aesthetic solution.
- Tooth sensitivity: certain composite restorations can also help treat tooth sensitivity caused by enamel wear or exposed dentin. By covering sensitive areas, these materials reduce sensitivity and improve your daily comfort.
Conservative Treatment Procedure
- Precise diagnosis: a clinical examination and imaging are performed to assess the condition of your tooth.
- Tooth preparation: minimal removal of damaged tissue is carried out to preserve as much natural tooth structure as possible.
- Treatment application: placement of a composite, inlay or onlay is performed as appropriate for your case.
- Polishing and adjustment: comfort, aesthetics and chewing function are optimized.
- Personalised follow-up: regular check-ups are scheduled to ensure long-term durability of your treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions about Adhesive Dentistry: Conservative Treatments
What is adhesive dentistry?
Adhesive dentistry is a modern, minimally invasive approach that repairs your damaged tooth while preserving as much of its natural structure as possible. Using materials such as composite resins, inlays or onlays, it restores strength, aesthetics and functionality while maintaining the integrity of your tooth.
When are conservative treatments used?
Conservative treatments are indicated to treat your cavities, repair a broken tooth, reinforce a weakened tooth after a root canal, or replace old visible fillings. They are also used in cases of tooth wear or cracks. The goal is to restore your teeth while avoiding more extensive procedures, such as crowns or extractions.
Are composite fillings durable?
Yes. Modern composite resin fillings are strong and long-lasting. They also provide a natural aesthetic, as their colour blends seamlessly with your tooth. Longevity depends on your diet, your oral hygiene, and regular dental check-ups.
What is the difference between an inlay, an onlay, and a direct composite filling?
A direct filling (or “plombage”) is a classic restoration, usually in composite resin, applied directly in the mouth in a single session. Inlays and onlays are custom-made in a laboratory (ceramic or composite) and bonded to the tooth. They offer greater strength, perfect precision, and longer durability. Their fabrication typically requires two appointments spaced about a week apart.
Are conservative treatments covered by insurance?
In Switzerland, conservative treatments are generally not covered by basic health insurance (LAMal). If you have supplementary insurance, it may cover part of the cost depending on your plan. A detailed quote can be provided to you before any procedure.
